Natural Burials: A Gentle Return to Nature

Posted by admin

As environmental awareness grows, more families are exploring end-of-life options that align with their values—particularly those that minimise impact on the earth. Natural burials, also known as eco or green burials, are emerging as a meaningful and sustainable alternative to traditional funeral practices.

At their core, natural burials focus on simplicity and environmental care. Unlike conventional burials, they avoid the use of embalming fluids and synthetic materials, allowing the body to return to the earth naturally. This approach supports the natural cycle of life while reducing the environmental footprint typically associated with traditional burial methods.

Only biodegradable materials are used in a natural burial. Coffins are typically made from untreated timber, wicker, or bamboo, while some families choose a simple fabric shroud. Materials such as treated wood, metal, plastics, and synthetic fabrics are not permitted, as they can interfere with the natural decomposition process and potentially harm the surrounding environment.

On the Sunshine Coast, Eumundi Cemetery offers a dedicated natural burial area designed to preserve and enhance the natural landscape. Located within a tranquil, forested setting, the area is surrounded by native vegetation and established trees, creating a peaceful environment that supports local wildlife and natural regeneration. It provides a calm and reflective space for families to say goodbye.

The approach to burial sites in a natural setting is also different. Rather than clearly defined individual plots, sites are allocated sequentially at the time of burial, and they cannot be reserved in advance. Traditional headstones are not used. Instead, families may choose to commemorate their loved ones through inscriptions on a shared memorial at the entrance, while the exact burial locations are digitally recorded by the council.

Families are welcome to bring fresh flowers, provided they are natural and biodegradable, maintaining the integrity of the environment. Ashes may also be scattered or interred within the natural burial area, although it is advisable to confirm requirements with the local council beforehand to ensure everything proceeds smoothly.

For many, natural burial offers a deeply personal and environmentally responsible way to honour a loved one. It reflects a desire to return to nature, support sustainability, and create a legacy that respects both life and the land.
