Talking about death can feel uncomfortable, but it is one of the most important conversations we can have. Each August, Dying to Know Day events are held across Australia to encourage open, practical and meaningful discussions about end-of-life planning, funerals and the choices available to families.
On Saturday 8 August 2026, Gregson & Weight Funeral Directors will open the doors at its Buderim premises for a community Open Day designed to answer the questions many people have, but may not know who to ask.
For most people, arranging a funeral is a responsibility they may face only once or twice in their lifetime. For the team at Gregson & Weight, supporting families through this important journey has been their vocation for more than five decades.
Established on the Sunshine Coast in 1972, Gregson & Weight is the region’s longest-serving funeral director and has assisted more than 45,000 families in their time of need. As fully accredited members of Funerals Australia, the company is recognised for its professional team, quality facilities and commitment to exceptional service.
Community engagement has always been central to Gregson & Weight’s values. The annual Dying to Know Open Day is an opportunity to de-mystify death and dying, encourage informed decision-making and help people feel more confident when talking with loved ones about their wishes.
Visitors will be able to tour the facilities, meet the Gregson & Weight team, view informative displays and speak with exhibitors about a wide range of end-of-life topics. The Open Day will also feature the company’s remarkable fleet of classic and vintage hearses, including its historic restored 1923 Dodge hearse.
Displays and information will cover Sunshine Coast cemeteries, pre-paid funerals, funeral bonds, eco-friendly coffins, urns and jewellery, monumental headstones and plaques, Voluntary Assisted Dying, body donation programs, grief support and more. Organisations such as Palliative Care Queensland, Sunshine Coast Cemeteries, RSL Queensland, Ambulance Wish QLD and funeral bond providers will also be represented.
There will also be a live outside broadcast by 104.9 Sunshine FM from 8.00am to 12 noon.
Whether you are planning ahead, supporting someone else, or simply curious about what happens behind the scenes, the Open Day offers a welcoming space to ask questions and learn more.
“Meaningful and memorable funerals don’t happen by chance,” said General Manager Luke Gregson. “They require a dedicated team of experienced professionals, supported by the right facilities and resources, to bring each family’s wishes to life while helping to ease the burden during a difficult time.”
Luke also said the event is about making important conversations easier for the community.
“We’ve been supporting families on the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland for over 50 years, so our experienced team truly knows what organising a funeral is all about. When it comes to pre-planning, it can be hard thinking about the inevitable, but it just makes good sense. Everyone is welcome at our Open Day to see what goes on behind the scenes and take the opportunity to ask us for answers to the questions they’ve been dying to know.”
