Gregson & Weight stands today as the Sunshine Coast’s longes-established funeral directors—a reputation built on more than a century of dedication, compassion, and family leadership. The story begins in 1897 in Horsham, Victoria, with Alfred Fowler Weight, whose commitment to serving families in their most difficult moments laid the foundation for a legacy that would endure across five generations.
Following Alfred, the family business passed through the hands of Stanley and Thelma Weight, who continued to build on those values when they purchased a funeral home in Williamstown. Their children, John and Jan Gregson, later joined the business, ensuring the continuity of family involvement.
A major turning point came in 1972, when the family moved to Caloundra and established a new funeral service on the Sunshine Coast. Stanley Weight remained active in the business well into his nineties, embodying the commitment that defined the company. After the passing of his parents, John and Jan, their son Luke Gregson stepped forward to carry the mantle as the fifth-generation funeral director.
Today, Gregson & Weight has grown into a trusted organisation with four branches, more than 50 staff, and its own crematorium facilities. Despite this growth, the company maintains its core values of care, integrity, and community connection—principles that have guided the family for more than 125 years.
Innovation has also played a key role in the company’s evolution. Gregson & Weight was among the first locally to introduce photographic tributes and to offer live-streamed funeral services, allowing friends and family around the world to connect with important moments of remembrance.
These advancements have helped open up conversations around funerals, making it easier for people to discuss their wishes and plans. According to Luke, community events such as their Open Day—where visitors can tour facilities, meet the team, and ask questions in a relaxed setting—are part of an ongoing effort to normalise and demystify the subject of end-of-life planning.
Looking ahead, Luke is committed to continuing the conversation. He plans to explore topics such as preparing financially for funeral expenses, understanding the differences between burial and cremation, and navigating the steps required after a loved one passes away. With a willingness to answer questions directly from the community, he aims to keep supporting families with the openness and compassion that has defined Gregson & Weight for generations.
