Talking about funerals can be difficult, yet understanding their purpose is an important part of how we cope with loss. As General Manager of Gregson and Weight, Luke Gregson explains that funerals play a vital role across all cultures in helping people respond to death in meaningful, respectful and shared ways.
At their heart, funerals acknowledge that a life has ended. They create space for family and friends to remember, grieve and support one another through personal stories, music, photos and reflections. These rituals honour the life lived and the impact the person had on others.
Funerals also play a crucial part in the grieving process. Grief can feel overwhelming, but gathering together reminds people that they are not alone. Shared memories—whether expressed through tears or even moments of laughter—help individuals begin to heal. Whether it’s a burial, cremation or memorial service, a funeral helps people accept the reality of loss and take their first steps forward.
For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, this process holds deep spiritual significance. Known as “Sorry Business,” these ceremonies strengthen the connection to Country, ancestors and community. Gregson and Weight’s facilities include chapels equipped for smoking ceremonies, ensuring families can honour their cultural practices in a respectful and meaningful way.
Families often share with Gregson & Weight how meaningful funerals have helped them face the reality of a loved one’s death, express their grief with the support of others, search for meaning and ultimately move forward. Regardless of religion, culture or tradition, Gregson and Weight is committed to honouring each individual and walking alongside families during difficult times.
