A Gregson & Weight Christmas

Christmas is a time when families traditionally come together, but for those who have experienced the loss of someone they love, it can also be a time when their absence is felt particularly deeply.

For 16 years, Gregson & Weight has held our Christmas Memorial Nights to provide families with an opportunity to pause during the busy Christmas season, come together with others who understand, and remember the people who continue to hold an important place in their lives.

This year, our Christmas Memorial Nights will again be held across our four Sunshine Coast locations in Noosaville, Nambour, Buderim and Caloundra.

Why We Hold Our Christmas Memorial Nights

Grief does not follow a calendar. Birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions can bring memories to the surface, and Christmas can be particularly significant.

Familiar traditions, songs, gatherings and places can remind us of previous Christmases shared with someone we love. For some families, the first Christmas following a death can feel particularly different. For others, those feelings of remembrance can remain many years later.

Our Christmas Memorial Nights are not about asking anyone to put their grief aside. They are an opportunity to acknowledge it, remember someone important and spend time with others who may understand something of what you are experiencing.

Over the years, these evenings have become an important tradition for Gregson & Weight and many of the families we have cared for.

Our Tree of Remembrance

At each Christmas Memorial, families are invited to place an ornament on our Tree of Remembrance.

You might choose to write your loved one’s name, a short message, a favourite saying or simply a few words that hold special meaning to you.

Each of our four branches has its own Tree of Remembrance, which remains on display in the foyer throughout the lead-up to Christmas.

If you are unable to add an ornament during the memorial evening, or think of something you would like to add afterwards, you are welcome to visit your local Gregson & Weight branch and add to the tree during the Christmas season.

It is a simple gesture, but seeing the names and messages gathered together on the tree creates a moving reminder of the many people who continue to be remembered by families throughout our community.

Memories Slideshow

Photographs often capture memories that words cannot.

Families are invited to provide a photograph of their loved one to be included in the Memories Slideshow shown as part of the Christmas Memorial.

Seeing the faces of those being remembered is an important part of the evening and allows us to collectively acknowledge the lives, personalities and memories represented within the room.

If you would like your loved one’s photo featured in one of our memorial slideshows, please email your chosen branch by clicking on the RSVP link above and attach their photo and remind us of their name. If your loved one was in our care and you would like to use the same photo as their notice, just let us know their name and we will find the correct photo.

A Candle to Take Home

At the conclusion of the memorial, each family will receive a memorial card and candle in memory of their loved one.

You may choose to light the candle at home on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, during a family gathering or simply at a quiet moment when you would like to remember them.

There is no particular way it needs to be used. It is simply something to take with you from the evening and, if you wish, incorporate into your own Christmas traditions.

Supper and Time Together

Following the service, families are warmly invited to join us for supper in our tearoom.

There is no expectation to stay, but for those who would like to, it provides an opportunity to spend some time together after the memorial, speak with members of the Gregson & Weight team and connect with others from our community.

Joining Us from Home

We understand that not everyone who would like to attend can be there in person.

Each of our four Christmas Memorial Nights will therefore be livestreamed, allowing family members and friends to watch from home or from elsewhere in Australia and overseas.

You can access each livestream using the links above. If you know someone who would like to share in the memorial but cannot attend, you are very welcome to send the relevant link to them.

Remembering Someone at Christmas

Remembrance can take many forms. It may be lighting a candle, hanging an ornament, cooking someone’s favourite meal, visiting a meaningful place, looking through old photographs or simply speaking their name.

There is no right way to remember someone, and Christmas traditions can change as our families and circumstances change.

We have put together some gentle ideas for remembering someone special during the Christmas season.
